Nestiva’s Guide to Pristine Stone Countertops

Countertops are the functional centrepiece of any kitchen. However, different materials require specific chemistry to stay beautiful. Here is our expert advice on how to safely and effectively clean your surfaces.

How to Clean Quartz Countertops

Quartz is a non-porous, highly durable engineered stone, making it relatively easy to maintain. However, its resin binders can be sensitive to chemicals.

  • Daily Cleaning: For everyday spills, simply wipe the surface with a soft cloth or sponge, warm water, and a mild dish soap.
  • Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Never use abrasive cleaners, scouring pads, or highly acidic/alkaline chemicals (like bleach or oven cleaner). These can dull the finish and damage the resin.
  • Tough Spills: For dried-on messes, use a plastic scraper to gently lift the residue. Avoid metal blades which can scratch the surface.

How to Clean Granite and Natural Stone

Granite, marble, and limestone are porous. They rely on a thin layer of sealant to prevent liquids from penetrating the stone.

  • Daily Cleaning: The safest method is to use warm water and a stone-specific cleaner with a neutral pH. If you use dish soap, ensure it is very mild and rinse thoroughly to avoid a “filmy” buildup.
  • Immediate Wipe-Ups: Acid is the enemy of natural stone. Wipe up spills like lemon juice, vinegar, or wine immediately, as they can “etch” (chemically burn) the stone and degrade the sealant.
  • Sealing is Key: Natural stone should be professionally sealed periodically (every 1–3 years) to prevent deep staining.
  • Avoid: Never use vinegar or ammonia. These common household items will strip the sealant and leave your stone vulnerable.
